How Concrete Resurfacing Works

Slab condition assessment We evaluate the existing concrete for structural integrity. Sections that have shifted vertically, heaved, or settled significantly relative to the surrounding slab are not candidates for resurfacing — they need removal and replacement. Sound slabs with surface wear, spalling, or cosmetic cracks proceed to prep.
Surface preparation The existing concrete is cleaned, any loose material is removed, and the surface is profiled so the overlay bonds correctly. Surface cracks that go through the slab are addressed before the overlay is applied — an overlay placed over unaddressed cracks will show those cracks again within a short period.
Overlay application A bonded resurfacing overlay is applied to the prepared slab. Thickness and material depend on the application — standard overlays run from a skim coat to roughly 3/8 of an inch. Decorative overlays that will be stamped or textured are applied at the appropriate thickness for the finish technique.
Finish and seal The overlay is finished to the specified texture — broom, trowel, or stamped pattern. Once cured, a sealer is applied. Sealing is required on resurfaced concrete — the overlay needs protection from UV and surface wear just like new concrete.

Colored and Stained Overlays

Concrete that has worn, faded, or spalled at the surface but is still structurally intact — no significant vertical shifting between sections, no heaved areas, no base failure underneath — is generally a good candidate. Concrete that has settled, heaved, or shifted vertically is not. We walk through that assessment during the estimate and tell you which category your slab falls into.

How thick is a concrete resurfacing overlay?

Standard resurfacing overlays range from a thin skim coat to approximately 3/8 of an inch. Decorative overlays that will be stamped or heavily textured are applied at the thickness required for the specific finish technique. The overlay is bonded to the existing concrete — it's not simply poured on top — which is what makes a properly prepared application durable.

How long does resurfaced concrete last?

A properly bonded overlay over a sound base slab lasts 8 to 15 years or more depending on surface use, sun exposure, and how consistently it's resealed. Outdoor surfaces in San Diego need resealing every two to three years. An overlay applied over a base that wasn't properly prepped — or over concrete with unresolved structural issues — will fail well before that.

Can resurfacing fix cracks in my concrete?

Surface resurfacing can fill and cover cosmetic cracks that don't go through the full slab.
