El Cajon's valley location traps heat from the surrounding hills — summer temperatures regularly run 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the coast. For concrete work, that means scheduling pours for early morning when conditions are cooler, applying curing compounds when needed, and protecting fresh concrete from drying too fast in high heat. Concrete that cures too quickly develops surface cracks during the curing process itself.

Clay soil throughout much of El Cajon behaves the same way it does throughout the inland valley — it expands in wet weather and contracts in dry weather. On slabs without adequate base prep, that movement pushes up on concrete from below. El Cajon's older neighborhoods also have mature trees whose roots have had decades to work their way under driveways and sidewalks. Root intrusion is one of the most consistent findings when we remove old concrete in this area.

Replacement projects in El Cajon almost always involve addressing the base after demo reveals what's underneath. Shallow gravel, uncompacted subgrade, and clay that was never stabilized are common findings. We rebuild the base as part of the replacement — not as an add-on — because the base is what determines how long the new concrete lasts.
