Concrete Staining in San Diego, CA

Color and character for existing concrete — inside and out.

San Diego Concrete Co. provides concrete staining in San Diego and throughout San Diego County for patios, driveways, pool decks, garage floors, and interior slabs. Concrete staining adds color to existing concrete without the cost or disruption of tearing out and replacing it — and in San Diego's decorative concrete market, stained surfaces are a popular upgrade for both outdoor living spaces and interior floor slabs.

Surface condition determines everything in a concrete staining job. Stains penetrate the existing concrete — they don't sit on top. That means cracks, stains, patches, and variations in the existing surface will show through in the finished color. We assess the slab condition before recommending a stain type and color so the result reflects what the concrete can actually deliver.

How Concrete Staining Works

  1. Surface assessment and prep - The existing concrete is evaluated for condition, previous coatings, and porosity. Surface prep — cleaning, light grinding, or profiling — ensures the stain penetrates evenly. Existing sealers or coatings must be removed before any stain is applied.

  2. Stain application - Stain is applied in the method specific to the product — acid stains are sprayed and worked in; water-based stains are applied by brush, roller, or sprayer depending on the surface and design. Application technique affects how the color distributes across the surface.

  3. Neutralize and rinse (acid stain) - Acid stains require neutralization after the chemical reaction is complete to stop the reaction and allow the surface to be rinsed clean. Water-based stains skip this step. Both require a clean, dry surface before sealing.

  4. Seal and protect - Every stained concrete surface is sealed before we leave. Sealing locks in the color and protects against UV fading, water penetration, and stain absorption. Outdoor surfaces in San Diego's sun require sealing — without it, color fades and the surface becomes harder to maintain.

WHAT WE DO

Concrete Staining Options in San Diego

Acid Staining

Acid stains create color through a chemical reaction with the minerals in the concrete. The result is a mottled, variegated appearance — no two slabs look exactly the same. Colors tend toward earthy tones: amber, terra cotta, brown, and blue-green. Popular for patios and interior floors where an organic, natural look is the goal.

Water-Based Concrete Staining

Water-based stains offer a wider color palette and more consistent, predictable coverage than acid stains. The look is still penetrating color rather than a surface coating, but with more control over uniformity. A better fit for projects where a specific, consistent color is the priority.

Exterior Concrete Staining

Patios, driveways, pool decks, and walkways are all candidates for exterior staining. San Diego's UV is intense — exterior stained concrete needs a UV-resistant sealer and regular resealing every two to three years to maintain appearance and protect the surface.

Interior and Garage Floor Staining

Interior slabs and garage floors are well-suited to staining because they're protected from direct UV. Interior stained concrete is lower maintenance than exterior — sealing is still required but resealing intervals are longer. Garage floors benefit from a topcoat with good abrasion resistance in addition to color.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between acid staining and water-based staining?

Acid staining works through a chemical reaction with the minerals in the concrete — it produces a mottled, one-of-a-kind appearance with earthy tones that can't be exactly replicated. Water-based staining offers a broader color range and more predictable, uniform coverage. The right choice depends on the look you want and the condition of the existing slab. We'll walk through both options during the estimate.

Can you stain existing concrete, or does it need to be new?

Existing concrete can be stained. The surface needs to be clean, free of previous sealers or coatings, and in acceptable structural condition. Cracks, patches, and variations in the existing concrete will show through the stain — we assess the slab condition before recommending a stain type so you know what the finished surface will look like.

How long does stained concrete last outdoors in San Diego?

The stain itself is permanent — the color penetrates the concrete and doesn't peel or flake. What requires maintenance is the sealer over the top. Outdoor stained concrete in San Diego's sun needs resealing every two to three years to protect the color and surface. Without regular resealing, the sealer breaks down and the surface becomes more vulnerable to UV fading and stain absorption.

Do I need to seal stained concrete?

Yes. Sealing is not optional for stained concrete — it's what protects the color and the surface. Without a sealer, stained concrete absorbs oil, water, and debris and fades faster under UV. We seal every stained surface before completing the job, and we provide a reseal schedule based on whether the surface is interior or exterior and the level of sun exposure.
